Killington Open For Skiing in June For First Time Since 1990s

Killington ski area in Vermont, USA, has announced it will offer skiing next weekend, on June 4th and 5th, the first time it has opened in June since 1997.

June 1st marks the start of summer by the meteorological measurement of the seasons so that will make it the first summer skiing this century in Vermont and it is believed all of the Eastern US.

Killington began making snow on its Superstar trail in mid-October last years and continued piling it on for more than six-months to the end of March. The accumulated snow depth means that while snow has melted from the slopes all around, Superstar remains open.

“When lift operations conclude, we will have offered more than 190 days of skiing and riding this season here at Killington,” said Mike Solimano, president and general manager of Killington Resort. “

In 1997 season Killington’s season lasted until June 22nd, but this year it is talking about the coming weekend as being its final weekend of the season.  The run will be open on Saturday from 9am to 5pm and, “if conditions allow” on Sunday too.

Complimentary commemorative t-shirts will be available on Saturday, June 4 while supplies last.

Other US ski areas still open into June include Mammoth in California, Arapahoe Basin in Colorado, Crystal Mountain in Washington State and timberline in Oregon.

The coming weekend will also see the southern hemisphere’s 2022 ski season get underway with ski areas due to open in Australia, New Zealand and Lesotho.
